Supporting Female Veterans

Supporting Female Veterans

Our bravest citizens often fight a new battle at home – mental health struggles. This Women’s History month, CREOKS is especially grateful to our female veterans who deserve to feel empowered and healthy. But without an understanding of military culture or the unique challenges faced by vets, family and friends may feel uncertain about how to support their loved one. Here are seven tips to support the female veterans in your life.

  1. Educate yourself. Take some time to do your research. Learn about the common challenges faced by veterans from PTSD to suicidal ideation. Especially for women, one in three women veterans in the VA healthcare system report experiencing military sexual trauma.
  2. Develop empathetic communication. Actively listen to their stories, they wish to share, and remain extra sensitive when the topics are trauma centered.
  3. Celebrate achievements. Uplift their spirits and show your pride and gratitude for their service during important anniversaries or recognition ceremonies.
  4. Help with practical needs. Assist veterans in finding resources for employment, housing and healthcare. These can be difficult to navigate when returning to civilian life.
  5. Have the tough conversations. If you are concerned about their mental health, don’t ignore it. In 2022 an average of 17 veterans died by suicide. Don’t hesitate to check in.
  6. Build a strong support network. Encourage them to foster connections with other female veterans. Women Vets USA or Women Veterans Network have chapters across the country.
  7. Remind them to get checkups. Although physical and mental assessments aren’t required after military service, veterans need to attend annual checkups. Vets have higher rates of chronic pain, depression or even long-term health effects from the conditions in which they served.

For the strong women who serve our country, let’s support them both during and after their service.
