Addiction to alcohol can sneak up on you. Many people that develop disordered alcohol use start with occasional drinking in a responsible way.
April is Alcohol Awareness Month which is the perfect time to reevaluate your relationship with alcohol and make note of any concerning habits.
7 Signs Early Warning Signs of Disordered Drinking
- Spending More than Planned – If you are habitually ordering more than “the usual” or your wallet is feeling the impact, these are early warning signs.
- Increased Tolerance – When you need to drink more to feel the “buzz,” your brain and body have adjusted to your alcohol intake. The decrease in sensitivity is a red flag
- Risky Behavior – Intoxication often increases poor decision-making. You may not properly assess a situation and fully grasp the implications of your actions. If your behavior has scared you, or loved ones show concern for your safety, it’s time to examine your drinking habits.
- Relationships Struggle – If drinking causes friction in relationships or exacerbates life problems, it’s time to reevaluate the level of importance you place on alcohol.
- Fewer Activities – Time spent drinking may sometimes become a priority over your hobbies, exercise routine and social engagements. Ask yourself, “Am I spending less time on hobbies or activities I enjoy?”
- Drinking Makes You Sick – If you are regularly having alcohol-induced headaches, vomiting or more serious signs like liver damage, you need to discuss your alcohol consumption with a health professional.
- Inability to Quit – If you have been worried enough to try to quit drinking and it didn’t happen, reach out for help.
